At a time where sports seasons and tournaments have been canceled or postponed, there’s one thing we can be sure to look forward to this month: Hockey. Today, we announced our partnership with TELUS and the deployment of our wearable safety technology at the IIHF 2021 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships in Edmonton, Alberta. Our team has been hard at work over many months and we’re excited to support the health and safety protocols established by Hockey Canada and local authorities during this iconic event on its 45th anniversary as the official contact tracing solution.

How This Works

Teams from all over the world arrived on Sunday, December 13, 2020 and are self-isolating at their respective hotels until December 17, 2020. During this time, they are provided with a TraceSafe disposable quarantine management wristband that will help ensure that all health and safety protocols are met.

At the start of the championship games on Sunday, December 26, 2020, all teams, event staff and press will be issued their event credentials which will come embedded with TraceSafe’s contact tracing beacon. TraceSafe powered by TELUS will be able to track physical distancing and perform contact tracing for all participants, complemented by regular COVID-19 testing throughout the championship to ensure a safe environment for all.

Our technology can quickly and seamlessly record potential exposure, enabling administrators to notify individuals which have come into contact with attendees who have disclosed or been diagnosed with COVID-19. These individuals can promptly be isolated and tested, an element that will be extremely important in containing an outbreak and ensuring the health of all participants, something that is paramount to the success of this long standing event.

Our Privacy-First Approach

Protecting privacy is extremely important to us, which is why we have security and privacy built into our solutions. Data collected by TraceSafe powered by TELUS wearables is pseudonymized and secured using top-level encryption and our technology only monitors interactions with other people within authorized locations. Once you leave the contact site (ie: the “bubble’’), contact tracing stops — there’s no concern of being continuously monitored from that point. Another facet to note is that there is absolutely no connection to one’s phone that is needed for this process to be secure and effective.

We take pride in our role of keeping teams, players, staff and press safe during the two-week tournament on an important year. Ensuring safety and comfort is something that TraceSafe takes extremely seriously and we eagerly anticipate kicking off and having a great event over the final days of 2020.
